Vostra chair

By Walter Knoll Studio
Designed: 1949

History

First introduced in 1949, the Vostra Chair was developed during a period of post-war reconstruction in Germany. Its refined steel frame and softly curved seat made it a forward-thinking response to the needs of a modernising society lightweight, elegant, and built for flexibility across interiors. Over the decades, it’s become one of Walter Knoll’s enduring classics, balancing simplicity with sophistication.

This set of Vostra chairs came to us from a commercial office client in Melbourne’s Docklands, alongside a collection of other premium furniture. While the frames remained structurally sound, the upholstery and bases showed signs of wear from everyday use making them ideal candidates for careful restoration.

Cultivated

At Cultivated, each Vostra chair is first disassembled and carefully assessed. The steel bases are polished by hand to restore their original lustre, removing minor scuffs and oxidisation. Seats are reupholstered by our local partners in the customer’s choice of fabric, allowing for a contemporary update while preserving the integrity of the design. The result is a beautifully tailored piece that continues the Vostra legacy with a new lease on life.
