Kevi Chair

By Jørgen Rasmussen

Designed: 1958

History

Designed in 1958 by Danish architect Jørgen Rasmussen, the Kevi Chair is celebrated for its functional clarity and enduring comfort. Originally developed for Kevi, a Danish company known for technical office furniture, the chair’s defining innovation was its double-wheel castor, which became a standard in seating design. Over the decades, the Kevi Chair has been produced under various partnerships, including with Knoll, and remains a favourite in design-conscious workspaces and studios.

This particular chair was sourced from the personal collection of a Melbourne-based interior designer. Well cared for over many years, it offered an excellent base for restoration.

Cultivated

Our restoration focused on preserving the original materials while updating the key touchpoints. The aluminium frame has been hand polished to revive its original lustre, and the seat and backrest have been reupholstered in a fabric of the client’s choosing. The plastic components have been thoroughly cleaned, and while some signs of age remain, they are minor and consistent with its vintage. Overall, the chair presents in remarkable condition for its age, a testament to its thoughtful design and solid construction.

Knoll

This version of the Kevi Chair was produced by Knoll, the iconic American furniture company known for its modernist collaborations and precision manufacturing. While the Kevi design originated in Denmark, Knoll’s partnership helped bring the chair to a wider international audience. Its quality construction and timeless silhouette have ensured its longevity, and Cultivated’s restoration gives it another chapter in its design story.
