Bertoia Large Diamond
By Harry Bertoia
Designed: 1952
History
Designed by Harry Bertoia in 1952, the Large Diamond Chair is an enduring classic of modern design. Created from welded steel rods arranged in a delicate lattice, the chair balances industrial strength with sculptural beauty. Bertoia famously described his chairs as “mainly made of air,” and the Large Diamond remains one of the most elegant examples of mid-century metal furniture.
This particular chair was recovered from a commercial office building in Sydney. While the frame had dulled and the upholstery was tired, the piece retained its structural integrity and offered a strong foundation for restoration.
Cultivated
Each Bertoia chair is fully restored to ensure both comfort and authenticity. The metal frame is stripped and re-chrome plated to bring back its original shine and clarity. Worn rubber shock mounts and glides are replaced with genuine parts sourced directly from Knoll. The seat pad is reupholstered in a fabric of the client’s choice, offering an updated yet faithful expression of this iconic design. The result is a piece that honours Bertoia’s vision while supporting a longer product life.
